From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Divided.
Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt significant questions about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted
However, overall discourse on the right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
